Lucien LaBelle is a great D-man who happens to hate my guts. No big deal. Hockey rivalries are common. I deal with it, even though he used to be my best friend, and for reasons he never told me, shut me out and became a huge obstacle for me on the ice.

It’s cool. I get off showing him up every chance I get. It’s fun when he scowls and talks crap about me in press conferences. It means he still thinks about me whether he wants to or not.

That’s been our dynamic since we were drafted, and it worked for us, the fans, and our teams. Until it all changed when LaBelle was suddenly traded and we’re no longer rivals but teammates, playing on the same line.

When management forces a bromance angle between us, things don’t get easier but they definitely get steamier and dredge up the past. The more we work through our chemistry on and off the ice, the harder it is to ignore our future as teammates and maybe something more.

I’m out and proud while LaBelle is so closeted he can’t find his way out. Can we survive the spotlight and our growing feelings or are we bound to repeat history?
